Anne Vekklyn

Anne Vekklyn is a fine-art photographer whose current work includes images of the American southwest, northwest landscapes, and architectural photography.   Her passion, however, is macro photography, and those subjects are as close at hand as a neighbor’s well-tended flower garden.  Anne takes intimate close-ups of blooms, husks and the occasional visiting damselfly or bee.  Her lush prints range in scale from the diminutive to the grand, with her micro subjects magnified well beyond life-size.  These exotic biological portraits often require contemplation, as if her subjects are reticent, unwilling to reveal their identities.

“I try to look for a level of detail where the known becomes familiar and the literal slips into the abstract,” says Anne.

Her images often require the same degree of engagement and study as digesting a good poem, and Anne was a poet before she was a photographer.  She was awarded an MFA in creative writing from the Warren Wilson program in Swannanoa, NC and has published poetry in Calyx, Poetry, TriQuarterly and many other literary magazines.

Anne often can be tracked down either in or near water.  She is a masters swimmer with the Bainbridge Area Masters (BAM) and an open water rower around Bainbridge Island.  Her scuba diving certifications include ice diving, night diving and wreck diving, and she has been a shark research diver and collecting diver for the Seattle Aquarium, where she also volunteers regularly.

A selection of her oversize, seductive flower images is on display in the collection of The Doctors Clinic, at the Salmon Medical Center in Silverdale, WA.
